A black basalt statue of Cleopatra VII (C.51-30BC) stands in the British Museum in central London April 10, 2001. This statue together with a number of other fascinating discoveries have recently been lifted from the sea bed of Alexandria harbour providing a picture of life in the royal capital and revealing the impact of Alexandrian culture on the wealthier inhabitants of the Bay of Naples and upon Rome itself, where Cleopatra held court for nearly two years during Caesars dictatorship.
